If you’re living with diabetes, diabetic blood sugar level control is probably something that’s on your mind every day. You may have heard the term HbA1c, or even had an HbA1c test, but perhaps you don’t fully understand what the result means or why it is important.
The term HbA1c refers to glycated hemoglobin. What does that mean? Essentially, sugar sticks to the cells in your blood creating a sort of cell-sugar complex.
Getting tested for HbA1c is beneficial in that it shows an overall picture of what your average blood sugar levels have been over a period of time; whereas, with daily blood glucose tests, you are only seeing what is happening in your body at that moment. As a general reference, HbA1c levels for adults without diabetes are less than 6.0%. A prediabetes result is considered to be in the range of 6.0-6.4%. An indicator of diabetes would be a result of 6.5% or higher. Your doctor may recommend a lower or higher target for your HbA1c based on your individual needs.
You might still be wondering what more you can gain from an HbA1c test. Due to the manner in which HbA1c tests measure blood glucose control over a long period of time, we can use them as a reliable method to predict a person’s risk for developing complications associated with diabetes. Research has also shown that improving HbA1c levels by just 1% can cut risk for complications by 25%. This means that lowering your blood glucose levels over time can reduce your chances of suffering cataracts, heart failure, amputation and other complications.
If you are struggling with an elevated HbA1c, don’t panic! FMC Science is currently enrolling for a research study for those 40 years and older suffering from type 2 diabetes. Those that participate are seen by a board-certified physician, have access to possible new medications before the general public, and are compensated for time and travel.
