Type 2 Diabetes for Children and Young Adults– An epidemic in dire need of a new option

Posted on Posted in Diabetes

As parents, it’s our jobs to prepare our children to be successful and healthy adults. In preparation, most parents attempt to teach social skills, how to become financially independent and how to live a healthy lifestyle. But what happens if your child ends up with a medical condition, despite your best efforts? In our latest blog, we will explore a rising epidemic: – type 2 diabetes in children and young adults and tips that may help those with this medical condition.

Activity Level
If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times – an active lifestyle is an essential part of living a healthy life. But what if your child doesn’t want to be more active?
A great way to increase your child’s activity level is to make it fun! Invest in bikes for the whole family, explore the outdoors via a hike in your local park, or visit a waterpark and swim laps. Besides helping to manage blood glucose levels, exercise is also a great way to boost mood, energy level and manage weight. Sounds like a win-win to us!

Diet
For years, high protein, low carbohydrate diets have been highly recommended – and with good reason. Eating smaller, more frequent meals that are higher in protein typically keep us fuller longer, and can also help with glucose levels.
Other tips that may help your diabetic teen? Their own “snack drawer” in the fridge with healthy options. Whether it’s an apple and cheese stick, celery with peanut butter or bell peppers with hummus, being able to grab and go something healthy can help better manage glucose levels. Also, have you tried cooking with your children – it’s fun!

Medications
Common oral medications for type 2 diabetes may include Metformin or Novalog injections. While these treatments are considered tried and true options for many with type 2 diabetes, they don’t work for everyone.
If your child is between the ages of 10-24 and looking for a new option to manage insulin levels, a clinical study may be an option. Your child could help advance modern medicine by testing a potential new medication for free! Research participants receive hands-on care from a board certified physician, plus all exams and tests are paid – no out of pocket costs!

Do you want to see if your child qualifies to participate? This study might be the option you are looking for.
